Why is it important for designers to learn the language of business? 

Intro
When the designers understand the end goal and objectives of the business, then they will be able to align their design solutions with those objectives. This will ensure that the design efforts are associated directly with corporate success, increasing the value of the designer's work. 

Why negative space is important?

Imagine a room filled with all sorts of furniture, appliances, and every conceivable item you'd need to live. It would feel congested, wouldn't it? Even if everything were neatly arranged, one would constantly bump into everything, for it would feel so constricted and dazed.

Just like how a room needs empty space to be functional and comfortable, any design-from that of a website to a poster, even to a product-requires negative space as well. It is precisely that room-space which allows the viewer to consume information easily, enjoy the elements, and navigate the design without feeling bombarded.

Negative space is not some emptiness; rather, it is an element in design that adds clarity between clear eye guiding and improving overall user experience altogether.

How to implement negative space in design?

1. To reduce clutter: Just like negative space between words on pages, it creates a visual buffer among design elements. This strategic placement of empty space around an object, image, or text prevents overcrowding and visual chaos. This will allow the eye to wander around the design, recognizing and relating key things easily. An overcrowded design without negative space will be overwhelmingly confusing, which makes it hard to understand. The negative space serves an appropriate purpose as it is very much of a visual hierarchy. This will be able to guide the view and easily fetch most people to perceive that the information presented is important.

2. To highlight key elements: Imagine walking straight down a street at night - the first picture presents a scene, in which in every building every window does gleam. The place is a hive of activity, possibly with lively holiday festivities or a neighborhood alive with activities. There is nothing so abnormal that it is noticed a second time, it's just normal.

Now imagine the same street; this time every window is dark with the exception of that one. Quite an illuminated window. You wonder: 'Who would be awake at this time? What might he or she be doing? Is everything okay?'

And this would be the powerful difference, which is negative space. Darkness cranked up the drama of that single light in the window; negative space does the same for the elements in a design by causing visual contrast. A sort of spotlight on the most important data and sets it apart from all the other important elements.

3. To create breathing space for the audience: Imagine a movie which has background music through out the entire length of the movie including the talkie portions. How would you feel watching that movie? Wont it be too much overwhelming for the audience? Background music is added to a movie only to elevate and emote the scene in a better way for its audience, but if it starts going beyond a limit such that making it difficult to understand the story and appreciate the nuances of their performances then it is the same background music which will spoil the movie experience. There is a famous saying about background music "a music director's job is just not about adding music to a scene, he/she should also know when and where not to add." 

Imagine a brochure packed with images, text, and QR codes. It will be visually chaotic and impossible to comprehend the key information and meaning the message. The viewer's eyes could dart from text to image, as they could not settle on anything.

Like a composer who knows when to keep quiet, a good designer appreciates the art of negative space. It is not emptiness; it is free room for visual breathing, rest, and focus on those essential elements. Just like music can enhance without overwhelming the whole movie, so can negative space with designs create clarity, hierarchy, and visual impact.

4. To convey mood and emotion: Negative space can be used as an effective tool to make the viewer or audience to feel in a particular way. Just imagine multiple dots placed randomly in an area and ask a viewer to decribe it in one word. He/she would reply as "scattered", "chaotic", "disoriented" or something in line with that. Now place the same dots with same amount of horizontal and vertical negative space between them and ask a viewer to describe it in one word. Now, their answers would be like "arranged", "grid", "array", "organised" . It is the same dots but by changing the negative space between them we are able to make the audience change their perception about it. This is how we can use negative space to convey mood or emotion.

Conclusion

Anatomy of typeface is critical knowledge that designers should possess because once a designer knows how to deploy the minute details and nuances in these typefaces, they can not only create visually pleasing and aesthetic designs but also deeply meaningful and impactful ones. With the advancements in technology, there is an even greater push and expectation towards the christened limits of legibility, expression, and visual communication. By learning these very inconspicuous things, one will be unlocking a great many opportunities from type-creating wonderful and remarkable visual communication.
