Thanjavur is also known as Tanjore, the word Thanjavur is a tamil name. Meaning of "Than" - cold, "chei" - farmland, "ur" - city, the city surrounded by cold farm lands. Later the word "Thancheiur" has become " Thanjavur",It is a historic city. Thanjavur is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, such as the field of art, music and dance. The city is center for classical south indian art like bharathanatyam, Carnatic music and tanjore painting. The thanjavore painting is famous paintings, charactertics by vivid colors, simple iconic composition and gold foil embellishments. Thanjavur is famous for its traditional toy called "Thanjavut Thalaiyatti Boomai" in tamil language, which means " Thanjavur Head Shaking Doll". Major attraction in the city is "Brihadesswarar temple(Thanjavur Big Temple)",dedicated to lord shiva the temple is build by Raja raja chola in the 11 century. The temple turn 1000 yearsn old in 2010. The temple tower is 216 height and there is big statue of nandhi (sacred bull) is 16ft long and 13ft high. The temple is one of the most visited tourist place in tamilnadu.
